IIHS Test Track Tour (virtual)
This virtual event will take SAE members and their guests to the world’s largest covered test track, located at the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s Vehicle Research Center in central Virginia.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) is an independent, nonprofit scientific and educational organization dedicated to reducing deaths, injuries and property damage from motor vehicle crashes. In 2015, IIHS opened the 5-acre covered track to allow for year-round testing of active safety systems, free from weather-related interruptions. Along with IIHS crash tests, these evaluations are the basis for the Institute’s widely consulted vehicle ratings.
At this event, you’ll get to watch our vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention tests and see how we evaluate headlights. IIHS experts will be available to answer all your questions following the presentation.
This event is co-hosted by SAE Detroit. Sign up in advance at the link below to participate.
Student Days
What is "Student Days" in Member Connection?
This is an activity that takes place in the NEW Student Community in Member Connection. The student community is a space for students to interact with their peers and discuss technical topics, vehicle competition topics (Baja, Formula, or Aerodesign), exchange ideas around SAE Collegiate Chapters, and more.
This spring "Student Days" includes: the Dream Job Chat* (more information on that below), a survey/questionnaire, and a poll. By participating in these activities, you'll have a chance to win $50 digital Amazon giftcards (see contest rules below).
There will also be some announcements made over the course of the two days to inform you of new student member benefits and happenings. Questions? Send a note to membershipteam@sae.org or @AmandaHildabrand here in Member Connection.
"Your Dream Job" Chat with the Experts May 25 and 26: Join the chat here.
During this spring Student Days session, if you're trying to figure out what type of engineering degree you're interested in and what career path you’d like to go down…or if you're already down a path but would like to ask a practicing engineer questions, this chat is for you!*
Chat Hosts:
David Craig
Chief of Maps; General Motors; Vehicle Engineering Center
David graduated in 1992 from Oklahoma State University with a Masters in Business Administration and a bachelors in Electrical Engineering and Technology. He immediately went to work for Lowrance Electronics as a design engineer for the “new” GPS technology and to design GPS receivers, localization systems, and eventually mapping systems. Over the next 13 years, he worked his way up to Sr. VP of Engineering and Manufacturing, having approximately 1300 people reporting up to him. David left Lowrance in 2005 to start his own company. This quickly turned into multiple companies. He successfully started three different companies and sold two of them, with the third still in existence today. In 2016, David decided to join General Motors after they reached out to him via LinkedIn; a new role was created. His internal title is Technical Specialist – Automated Driving – Mapping Solutions. As one can tell, this doesn’t lend itself to print, so his external title is Chief of Maps. He is ultimately responsible for the strategy and execution of GM’s automated driving maps, including their content, data, structure, update process, map modules, and suppliers. In addition to his current role, he also co-chairs two different US-DOT subcommittees, speak at many industry conventions, and is actively involved in several Engineering/GM outreach activities.
Tynan Kassman
Quality Engineer, Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA)
Tynan went to Oregon State University and graduated with a degree in Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering. He has worked at DTNA for over 6 years in several roles, but his primary role has been in Corporate Quality. Tynan's primary function is project management for over 100 customer quality topics and working cross-functionally in the organization to solve those problems, as DTNA focuses on system and process improvements to solve customer quality problems quickly and robustly.

She worked in various internships in business and in the automotive industry, then landed her first professional job at International Truck and Engine Corporation, later Navistar International, in Fort Wayne, Indiana. She enjoyed working in product design and project engineering. She also presented the topic Globalization and Terminology in Diagnostics and Service at the 2008 SAE Commercial Vehicle Engineering Congress, based on her technical paper of the same title. Then she worked in quality engineering for Michelin North America at a BF Goodrich plant. She took a hiatus from engineering for 6 years, working as a freelance translator and interpreter for various agencies, while maintaining her interest in engineering as a board member of both the Fort Wayne Engineers Club and the local SAE Professional chapter, as well as serving on various SAE standards committees. She recently has branched into the aerospace and defense side of the industry, currently working for Raytheon Technologies as a Senior Technical Support Engineer, in the Engineering Documentation Coordinator role.

Monday: What are the main challenges for fully automated/autonomous UAM? How will it evolve with a mixed fleet of manned and unmanned aircraft?
Tuesday: New technologies and capabilities, which do not perfectly fit to the existing rules and standards, are being proposed. Engineers want standards and guidance for those technologies, but they are also developing the technologies before the standards. How do engineers overcome the challenge developing new technologies/capabilities for which existing rules don’t adequately apply and also the standards, which can help shape the rules? What are the risks and how will the products enter the market (prior to standards or after standards)?
Wednesday: How much are we having to start from scratch, and how much are we able to use existing work - or share efforts across various other aircraft types?
Thursday: How would the certification environment be different for eVTOL aircraft without standards? Would it be possible?
Friday: In which order will the following fly first for revenue service and approximately how time is needed for the others to follow? Unmanned aircraft with cargo payload, Unmanned aircraft with package payload, Manned eVTOL with passenger payload, Unmanned eVTOL with passenger payload.
